Biography

Albert Marquet

Albert Marquet (1875–1947) was a French painter and draughtsman, closely linked to Fauvism and lifelong friend of Matisse. After early experiments with bold colour, he developed a quieter, structurally precise language for Paris quays, harbours, rivers and coastal views. His elevated viewpoints, simplified silhouettes and muted atmospheres give modern life a calm, lucid poetry.
