René Dubois
René Dubois (1869–1958) was a French-Belgian painter and watercolourist associated with the Mons artistic milieu. Born in Strasbourg, he trained at the Brussels Academy in the early 1890s and later continued his artistic formation in Mons, where he taught and became linked with the circle Le Bon Vouloir. His work includes landscapes, city views, marines, interiors and portraits, often handled with a soft Impressionist sensitivity to light and atmosphere. Rather than dramatic modernism, Dubois favoured quiet observation. He focused on garden corners, town squares, coastal views and female figures, as they appear in restrained colour harmonies and delicate brushwork. His connection with the École de Mons situates him within a regional Belgian tradition that valued intimacy, luminism and daily surroundings. Museum and market records preserve him as a painter of modest, poetic scenes whose watercolours and oils turn ordinary places into calm, carefully felt environments.
