Biography

Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen d. Ä.

Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen the Elder (1664–1730) was a Flemish painter best known for his elaborate floral still lifes and decorative compositions. Born in Antwerp, he became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke and worked in a period when flower painting was highly popular in the Southern Netherlands. Verbruggen specialized in richly arranged bouquets set in ornate vases, often including insects, fruits, and symbolic details that enhanced the decorative effect. His works are characterized by vivid color, careful observation of botanical forms, and a strong sense of composition. He collaborated with other artists who painted figures or backgrounds, while he focused on floral elements. Verbruggen worked for aristocratic and wealthy patrons who valued his luxurious and highly decorative style. His paintings reflect the Baroque taste for abundance and visual richness. Today, he is regarded as an important representative of Flemish flower painting and its refinement in the early eighteenth century.
