A small rowing boat has moored under willow branches on the shore of a marshy lake in the foreground of this painting by Chigot. The water's surface reflects the surrounding nature and the two rural houses on the waterfront in a play of colours. In the background, a covered bridge completes the landscape scene.
The relaxed atmosphere of Chigot's other landscapes is also evident here and has a calming effect when viewing the work. One could almost think one could hear the gentle lapping of the water and the beautiful sounds of nature.
Eugène Chigot
Alongside Henri Le Sidaner, he helped develop the artistic life of Étaples and later became a founder of the Salon d’Automne. Chigot’s work often balances everyday coastal labour with poetic luminosity. Fishing boats, shorelines, village streets and wide horizons appear alive with wind, reflection and season. His landscapes preserve the modern, open-air spirit of French painting while remaining deeply rooted in place, observation and the mutable drama of the northern sea coast itself.
