In western Normandy, right by the sea, lies the small port town of Honfleur, which became a centre of artistic activity in the 19th century. Painters such as Courbet, Sisley, Monet, Pissarro and Renoir visited the town, and the Ferme St-Siméon farm became one of the birthplaces of Impressionism. 
Othon Friecz, who was born in Le Havre, not far from Honfleur, depicted the port of Honfleur here in his typical abstract style. Expressive and with rough brushstrokes, he gives a new twist to a classic Impressionist motif in this painting.
