Gerhard Marcks
Gerhard Marcks (1889–1981) was a German sculptor, draughtsman and printmaker, and one of the major figures of modern figurative sculpture. After early work with Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus in Weimar, he became artistic director of the Bauhaus pottery workshop in Dornburg, where craft, form and material discipline shaped his sculptural thinking. Marcks developed a restrained, humanist language centred on standing figures, animals, biblical and mythological subjects, often reduced to calm contours and essential volumes. His work balanced modern simplification with older traditions of carving, modelling and classical proportion. Under National Socialism, he was dismissed from teaching and his art was branded “degenerate,” yet he continued working with quiet persistence. After 1945, he regained public recognition, teaching in Hamburg and producing bronzes, stone sculptures, woodcuts and public monuments. His figures express dignity, vulnerability and moral endurance.
