Porcelain
37 cm (14⁵/₈ inches)
Depiction of a male Kabuki actor couple, finely modeled,
wearing wide, richly decorated robes with a V-neck in typical Kakiemon color scheme.
Kakiemon refers to certain Japanese porcelains and their European imitations, which were inspired by them. The name derives from the family business of Sakaida Kakiemon near the city of Arita, Hizen Province, which cultivated its own distinctive style. The Kakiemon style is characterized by sketchy lines, watercolor-like application of color, and asymmetrical compositions that leave large areas unpainted. Kakiemon porcelain is a subgenre of Arita porcelain.
