Description: Théophile Marie François LYBAERT
(Ghent 1848 – 1927)
Watercolor on paper
Lybaert began his career as a painter of genre scenes and Orientalist subjects, which also include this motif of North African jewellery sellers. In front of a white façade with a round-arched door, two men dressed in Oriental costume can be seen sitting and standing, offering their wares for sale and seemingly waiting for customers. The men's gaze is directed straight at the viewer. One could almost think that they are offering us their exotic treasures.
