A Pair of Jasper Vases with Gilded Bronze Mounting
50 x 23 cm (19⁵/₈ x 9 inches)
OK. Bazenova, State Museum Pavlovsk: Complete Catalog of Collections of Colored Stones, 2013, ss. 63-64.
The upper round plate has been regilded.
Each vase is campana-shaped with a flared egg-and-pipe rim. The upper part of the body is decorated with a band of vine leaves above a frieze of classically draped dancing girls. The outward-curving handles emerge from a band of acanthus leaves, on a fluted base. The square base is decorated with lyres and ribbon-tied wreaths, on a stepped base with lotus leaves on toupie feet. The shape was inspired by the famous Medici and Borghese vases, which were frequently reproduced in the Neoclassical and Empire periods.
