With strongly expressionistic brushstrokes, Henri Epstein depicts a harbour scene in this painting that brings the everyday life of fishermen to life. In the foreground, a figure with a large net over his shoulder walks towards one of the boats in the middle ground of the picture. Directly at the water's edge, dressed in yellow clothing similar to a Friesennerz raincoat, another person can be seen, dedicated to the hard work on the water. Epstein's colourful treatment of the subject with expressive brushstrokes makes the coastal scene shine like a sea of colours and immediately immerses the viewer in the maritime world of the fishermen.

Henri Epstein
Henri Epstein (1891–1944) was a Polish-Jewish painter of the School of Paris, born in Łódź and trained in Munich before settling at La Ruche in Montparnasse. Associated with Soutine, Modigliani and Kremegne, he painted landscapes, ports, figures and still lifes in expressive colour. His work remains a moving trace of a life and talent brutally destroyed at Auschwitz during the Holocaust.
