Even in Roman times, the small, idyllic port town of Sorrento was the summer residence of numerous aristocrats and wealthy citizens. During the 19th century, the town became one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations, attracting famous figures such as Goethe and Nietzsche to visit the small town by the sea. One of them was the Swiss painter Salomon Corrodi, who painted this watercolour of the bay of Sorrento in 1855, in which the evening sun bathes the sea, the coast and the bright facades of the houses in a southern light. The warm atmosphere of a southern summer evening permeates this work through and through.
