Wilhelm Krieger
Wilhelm Krieger (1877–1945) was a German sculptor and draughtsman, regarded as an important figure in early modern animal sculpture. Trained at the Royal School of Applied Arts and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, he also worked in Adolf von Hildebrand’s studio, where he absorbed a disciplined approach to form and structure. Krieger is best known for compact bronze animals, especially birds, deer and small mammals, modelled with calm concentration rather than anecdotal drama. His sculptures often reduce surface detail while preserving posture, balance and species character, placing him between naturalism and modern simplification. Works such as standing deer, marabou, ducks and other birds reveal his gift for stillness, alertness and precise silhouette. Although his bronzes rarely carry foundry marks, they are admired for high casting quality and formal clarity. Krieger’s animals feel observed, distilled and quietly monumental, even at modest scale.
