Georges Lucien Guyot
Georges Lucien Guyot (1885–1973) was a French animalier sculptor, painter and draughtsman whose work gave modern force to the observation of animals. Born in Paris near the artisan quarter of the Bastille, he first trained through woodcarving rather than formal academic study. His fascination with wildlife led him repeatedly to the Jardin des Plantes, where he studied animal anatomy, posture and instinct at close range. From 1918, he worked for decades at the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre, placing him near the experimental artistic world of modern Paris. Guyot sculpted panthers, bears, birds, dogs and other animals in bronze, stone and wood, favouring compact volumes, alert movement and expressive simplification over decorative detail. Close to the modern animalier tradition of Pompon and Sandoz, he turned animal sculpture into a study of presence, tension and essential form.
