Pendule. Pendule
France ca. 1785
Epoch Louis XVI
Signed: DE BELLE
Jean Francois de Belle, Paris, Rue de l’Arbre, Master 1781
Gilded bronze, casted and engraved, white marble
This clock is particularly decorative not only because of the good contrasts between the fire-gilt mounts and the white marble but even more so because of the masterly quality of execution. 18th Century clocks are far from being pure chronometers, they are enriched with fantasy, enjoyment of creation as well as the artistic requirements of the clientele such as on this accomplished work. As so often, De Belle who became maître in 1781 is recorded while the name of the maker of the case has to remain elusive for now.
