Hildebrandt’s extensive travels took him through the Scandinavian countries as far as the North Cape in 1856. In the subarctic regions, he was particularly fascinated by the midnight sun and other luminous phenomena observable only in these latitudes, which he captured in his atmospheric landscapes. In this expansive coastal scene, he depicts a colony of birds with their young, braving the pounding surf.
Hildebrandt’s Romantic vision was influenced by C. D. Friedrich.

In this expansive coastal scene, he depicts a colony of birds with their young, braving the stormy surf. They may be common murres (Uria aalge), whose name derives from their amusingly ungainly gait. This species is native to Norway, nests in the open on rocky ledges and, unlike penguins in the Southern Hemisphere, is capable of flight.
