Oswald Achenbach

Oswald Achenbach (1827–1905) was a leading German landscape painter of the Düsseldorf School. Celebrated for his luminous views of Italy, especially Naples, Rome and Venice, he moved beyond strict topographical accuracy toward dramatic light, glowing colour and atmosphere. From 1863 to 1872, he taught landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy, influencing a generation of artists.
