Biography

Théophile Marie François Lybaert

Théophile Marie François Lybaert (1848–1927) was a Belgian painter from Ghent, admired for religious and historical scenes in an archaic “modern Gothic” style. Inspired by Memling, Dürer and early Netherlandish art, he combined meticulous costume, architecture and devotional atmosphere. His paintings appealed strongly to conservative Catholic patrons and earned international recognition during his lifetime.
