Bronze with black-brown patina

According to legend, on September 8, 1008, the Virgin prevented the outbreak of the plague in Valencia by encircling the city with a cord. In commemoration of this event, a church dedicated to the patron saint was consecrated on May 4, 1864, an occasion Carpeaux attended in Valencia.
The story so moved him that he subsequently created two sculptural groups influenced by it. Notre Dame du Saint-Cordon, a group of Mary, Jesus, and the Infant Saint John, was created in 1864. The group presented here followed in 1870, after the birth of his eldest son, Charles. It depicts the artist's wife and Charles during the Siege of Paris in 1870/1871. The original plaster model of the cast is in the collection of the Musee Louvre in Paris.
