Description: Attributed to André-Louis Gilbert (Paris 1746-1809), master since 1774
Green-stained boxwood, rosewood, gilt bronze, marble top, two drawers
Marquetry scenes in the form of houses, ruins, and vases
As the Classicism prevailing in England began to increasingly dominate the French style throughout Western Europe in the second half of the 18th century, the design of the chest of drawers was reduced to strictly geometric forms. The simplified front section was enhanced at most by a central projection, a small angular projection in the center. In France, such chests of drawers were called "commodes a ressaut.
