A slightly cloudy sky allows the bright rays of the sun to shine through on this river landscape by Chigot, bathing the scene in warm light. The rural scenery makes all the hustle and bustle of the big city and everyday life disappear. Even the figures depicted seem to be merely observing the activity on the river, where a small boat is slowly sailing along. Through his choice of colours and motifs, Chigot has created a work that not only reflects the slower pace of rural life, but also seems to show the peaceful harmony between humans and nature.
Eugène Chigot
Alongside Henri Le Sidaner, he helped develop the artistic life of Étaples and later became a founder of the Salon d’Automne. Chigot’s work often balances everyday coastal labour with poetic luminosity. Fishing boats, shorelines, village streets and wide horizons appear alive with wind, reflection and season. His landscapes preserve the modern, open-air spirit of French painting while remaining deeply rooted in place, observation and the mutable drama of the northern sea coast itself.
