Biography

Johann Jakob Dorner

Johann Jakob Dorner the Elder (1741–1813) was a German painter, draughtsman and court artist active in Munich. Trained in Freiburg and Augsburg, he travelled through Italy, the Netherlands and Paris before becoming professor and gallery director in Munich. His historical and genre scenes, portraits and decorative work bridge late Rococo narrative elegance with the clearer structure of early Neoclassicism.
