Edouard Marcel Sandoz
Édouard Marcel Sandoz (1881–1971) was a Swiss sculptor and painter best known for his refined and highly expressive animal sculptures. He studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he initially trained in painting before turning to sculpture. Sandoz became one of the leading animalier artists of the twentieth century, creating elegant bronze depictions of birds, fish, horses, and exotic animals. His style combines careful observation of nature with decorative simplification, resulting in forms that are both realistic and stylized. He worked closely with leading Parisian foundries and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons, gaining international recognition. Beyond sculpture, Sandoz also designed decorative objects and participated in applied arts projects, reflecting the Art Deco spirit of his time. His works were widely collected in Europe and America. Today, he is regarded as a major figure in modern animal sculpture, admired for his balance of naturalism, elegance, and modern design sensibility.
