Pieter Snyers
Pieter Snyers, also recorded as Peeter Snijers (1681–1752), was a Flemish painter, draughtsman, engraver and collector active in Antwerp and briefly in England. Trained under Alexander van Bredael, he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1707 and later helped direct the Antwerp Academy. Snyers worked across portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, animals, fruit, flowers and game pieces, often on both canvas and copper. His most celebrated achievement was a series of twelve paintings representing the months of the year, combining allegory, seasonal labour, still life and daily life. He was nicknamed “De Heilige,” or “The Holy One,” for his pious manner and many portraits of clergy. His work joins late Flemish Baroque detail with eighteenth-century elegance, offering a refined, observant world of objects, people, rituals and cultivated collecting.
