Bodenmüller served as an officer in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 and subsequently created paintings related to the war, including Street Fighting in Versailles, Episodes from the Battle of Sedan, and Bavarian Troops at the Battle of Wörth. Other panels by Bodenmüller feature fantastical-allegorical motifs, such as Fantasies for Beethoven's C-sharp Minor Sonata.
