Description: Achenbach was a German painter who belonged to the Düsseldorf school of painting. Although less well known today, during his lifetime he was one of Europe's most important landscape painters and had a significant influence on the Düsseldorf Art Academy during his time as a teacher. His brother was Andreas Achenbach, twelve years his senior, who was also one of the most important German landscape painters of the 19th century. The two brothers were ironically referred to as the ‘A and O of landscape painting’.

Oswald Achenbach (1827–1905) was a leading German landscape painter of the Düsseldorf School. Celebrated for his luminous views of Italy, especially Naples, Rome and Venice, he moved beyond strict topographical accuracy toward dramatic light, glowing colour and atmosphere. From 1863 to 1872, he taught landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy, influencing a generation of artists.
