Description: Eugène Chigot, who was an avid traveller and painted numerous European ports, ships and coastlines, captured the Oude Maas in Dordrecht on canvas in this work. This lower course of the Waal and Maas rivers begins in the Dutch province of South Holland and, together with other waterways, forms the ‘Three Rivers Corner’ in the north of the city, which is considered one of the busiest waterways in the country.
With skilful brushstrokes, a nuanced choice of colours and a keen sense of composition, the French painter succeeded in capturing this view with its bustling activity on the water.
