Description: With just a few lines and brushstrokes, French artist Albert Marquet managed to capture this view of Venice.
The focus on the essentials in this work is also evident in the French artist's paintings and is thus representative of the oeuvre of this co-founder of Fauvism.
From 1906 onwards, Marquet undertook extensive travels through Europe, which also took him to the Italian lagoon city in 1908 and 1909. The present watercolour could therefore have been created during one of his European travels. However, as the painter was also in Venice in 1936 to represent France at the Biennale, this would also be a possible year of origin for the work.
The reduction of the landscape and the spontaneity of the brushstrokes are evident throughout this view of the city of the Doges. Marquet has created an intimate work that brings us a little closer to the artist.
