Since ancient times, furniture has been decorated with all kinds of animals and mythical creatures. In the 18th century, they were given whole animal legs, thus bringing influences from ancient Greece into the interior design of the finest houses: the fashion a la grecque. Particularly wild are the creations of the Russian architect, sculptor, and painter Voronikhin, who, beginning in 1803, restored Pavlovsk Palace, the Tsar's residence from 1768, after a fire. He particularly enjoyed adapting carved lion paws with stylized fur trim for the seating.
