Standing Monkey

Circa 1850
Patinated Bronze
31 x 21.5 x 13 cm (12¹/₄ x 8¹/₂ inches)
Signed: Fratin PARIS
Description: A standing monkey with a feathered hat, holding two baskets by its side, on a naturalistic cast base with another small basket on the back. The figure serves as a matchstick holder.

Fratin learned the craft under Pioche, but was reluctant to adopt his master's romantic style. He went to Paris, where he found a new master in the painter and sculptor Gericault. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salon (1831-42 and 1850-61) and at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Several of his bronze sculptures are on display at the Louvre in Paris, the Wallace Collection in London, and the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.
