Flemish, mid-17th century
Each with an old gilded frame
Dimensions: 22–22.5 cm x 32–32.5 cm each
This series of five peasant interiors, representing the five senses, is attributed to the Flemish genre painter Adriaen Brouwer (1605–1638). Brouwer, who is known for his partly grotesque, partly comical genre depictions, can be considered one of the leading representatives of genre painting and is represented in numerous internationally renowned collections.
Depictions of peasants have a long tradition in Dutch painting and were intended, among other things, to confront the viewer with their own values and moral concepts. The theme of the five senses is incorporated into these peasant scenes in a humorous way. For example, smell is represented by the changing of a nappy, and hearing by the quirky singing of a peasant choir.
