Carl Wuttke
Carl Wuttke (1849–1927) was a German landscape and architectural painter whose career was shaped by restless travel. Born in Trebnitz, Silesia, he studied in Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf, including with Angelo Quaglio and Eugen Dücker, before establishing himself in Munich. Wuttke first became known for Italian and Mediterranean views, walking to Italy in 1874 and later painting Sardinia, Sicily, Andalusia and Norway. His curiosity extended far beyond Europe: he travelled through North Africa, Egypt and Sudan, visited the United States in 1893, and undertook a world journey from 1897 to 1899 that included China and Japan. Several Asian subjects were painted for Kaiser Wilhelm II and displayed in the Berlin Palace. Wuttke’s work combines architectural accuracy, bright colour and atmospheric light, often animated by small figures, reflecting nineteenth-century fascination with travel, spectacle and global visual experience.
