Louis XV period

Description: Red lacquer on turned wood, decorated with engraved gold leaf.
Two boxes of this type and a square wig box (boîte à perruques), together with a mirror, would have formed part of a nécessaire de toilette (dressing case).
The two boxes depict chinoiserie scenes in exotic landscapes: a smoking lady conversing with a servant, and a possibly Buddhist scene in which incense is offered to a human figure surrounded by a serpent-shaped mandorla.
