Description: Achenbach was a German painter who belonged to the Düsseldorf school of painting. Although less well known today, during his lifetime he was one of Europe's most important landscape painters and had a significant influence on the Düsseldorf Art Academy during his time as a teacher. His brother was Andreas Achenbach, twelve years his senior, who was also one of the most important German landscape painters of the 19th century. The two brothers were ironically referred to as the ‘A and O of landscape painting’.
