Private Collection, New York/USA
Description: attributed to Jacques Antoine VALLIN
(Paris, 1760 – 1831)
“Drunken Silenus”
Flemish school, second quarter 19th century
with signature bottom left
oil on canvas, gilded frame
minor restorations
Painter of the French school, following Drevet. Exhibited at the Paris Salon, influenced by Prud'hon. Paintings by his hand in several public museums in France.
The present work is a newly discovered, and rare canvas from the early 1790s - a moment when Vallin started to exhibit at the Paris Salon. It depicts a drunken Silenus, Bacchus' own tutor and companion, surrounded by Pan and woodland muses who care to the god inside a forest clearing. The work is consistent with the light-hearted, openly sensual and often mythological themes adopted by painters at the end of the 18th century.
