Evening atmosphere at sea. Evening Scene at Sea
Josef Carl Berthold Püttner (1821–1881)
Oil on canvas | Signed lower centre, left
Dimensions (without frame): approx. 108 × 70 cm
19th century
Provenance:
Private collection, family heirloom.
Description:
The painting depicts an evening scene on a bustling coastline, with a rich atmosphere. At its heart lies the interplay of light, water and movement – in my view, typical of Püttner’s style.
The left-hand side of the picture is dominated by low-hanging sunlight, which spreads across the sky and the sea in golden and copper-coloured tones. The right-hand side of the picture shows several sailing ships – some at anchor, some about to set sail. In the foreground, a small rowing boat is approaching the jetty. The figures depicted are in motion: a man rows with concentration, whilst two other figures – possibly women or children – are absorbed in the scene. Barrels, ropes and wooden planks are stored on the pier – indications of a bustling trading port or a fish landing. The sea is choppy but not stormy. Seagulls and small boats enliven the scene.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition. The original canvas shows no damage or overpainting. The artist’s signature is visible at the bottom centre, on the left. | Ralph Gierhards Antiques & Fine
