Description: Exceptional wax relief
Frankfurt, c. 1790
Christian Benjamin Rauschner (1725–1793)
Signed lower left
Coloured wax relief on a glass panel painted on the reverse. A very finely crafted depiction based on an ancient model against a sky background. In a contemporary display frame with brass mounts.
Christian Benjamin Rauschner was baptised in Naumburg an der Saale. After completing his apprenticeship as a stuccoer, he travelled throughout northern and southern Europe. Rauschner was a sculptor and medallist, but was primarily active as a wax embosser. His numerous reliefs featuring motifs from ancient mythology or the Bible were well received by the public of the time
