Ferdinand Dorsch
Ferdinand Dorsch (1875–1938) was a German painter, graphic artist and teacher closely associated with Dresden. Born in Pécs and raised in Vienna, he studied at the Dresden Academy, where Gotthardt Kuehl introduced him to French Impressionist ideas and modern handling of light. After a period in Vienna, where he joined the Vienna Secession, Dorsch returned to Dresden and became active in progressive local circles, including Die Elbier and the Künstlervereinigung Dresden. His paintings of society life, interiors, portraits and park scenes combine academic drawing with freer brushwork, atmosphere and psychological observation. From 1914 he taught at the Dresden Academy, later serving as rector, and his students included major figures such as Otto Dix and Conrad Felixmüller. Although more moderate than the avant-garde he helped train, Dorsch occupied an important bridge between Dresden academic tradition, Impressionist colour and early twentieth-century modernism.
