Description: Cartel Clock
Paris ca. 1780
Epoch Louis XVI
Dial and movement are signed: REGNAULT A PARIS
Pierre-Antoine Regnault, Paris, Rue de la Peleterie, Rue de la Huchette,
Rue Vieille du Temple, Master 1754
Case stamped: OSMOND
Jean-Baptiste Osmond, Paris, Rue Poupée, Master 1764
Gilt bronzes, casted and engraved.
Based on the emerging “goût grècque” of the late 1760s and early 1770s that so favoured the classical vocabulary of acanthus, laurel, garlands, medallions, friezes and vases, this magnificent clock case was modeled by the exceptional “fondeur” Jean-Baptiste Osmond, who received his master title in 1764. He, as well as F. and J. Goyer and J. and J.J. Saint-Germain, are recorded supplying clock cases to Pierre-Antoine Regnault, who crafted the movement of this cartel. Regnault achieved a high status among clock-makers and was “garde-visiteur” between 1769 and 1770. An identical clock case is recorded in the collection of Izarn, Paris.
